*as she wipes cement from her fingers and hair…* Hi TKW Family! Happy Sunday! I almost forgot about this! With the remodel and still no kitchen now for what, 5 days, I’m busting my butt with Mr. Fantabulous to get the kitchen done. I just am taking a break now between installing the hardibacker cement board and saw my phone alert me with the “Post weekly menu”. I was like “OMG! ^%%$$@#%^ kitchen!” So I’m sorry for getting this to you later in the day than usual. You know prior to starting the kitchen we would watch those DIY shows and they made it look ‘easy’. LIES… it’s ALL LIES I tell you! It’s not easy when it’s just 2 people, it’s snowing outside, and you both have bad shoulders. The stuff is dusty, it stinks, it’s a mess and it’s loud!
Yesterday though was a big breakthrough in our marriage. It was actually a first which for me, was a huge deal. So this hardibacker board is this cement board that you put down between the base plywood floor and then the tile top. You put down cement, this board and then you nail it in. Each board is like 3×4 weighing about 25 pounds each and you put in like 32 nails into it. We’re using I think Mr. Fantabulous said 28 boards maybe (out kitchen is huge). So if you do the math, that’s around 900 nails that you have to put in. Yeah, I’m not hammering then in and he’s not so we’re using this pneumatic roofing nail gun.
Normally other than actually doing the plaster I play and gopher and clean up girl. Yeah, trust me, I’m not happy about that but a lot of the stuff we did I couldn’t do – I can’t wire stuff and using the saw scares me. So he puts the cement down for the first board and then nails it in. I have to sit there in case he needs me to get something or for moral support. LOL Yeah, I’m not a construction worker cheerleader babe.
After he puts the 2nd board down and puts in a few nails he looks at me, looks at the gun and says “Come here, I want you to nail this in. It’ll take forever if I do it myself.” My eyes got as big as saucers but he was patient, showed me how it work and said “Trust me hon, you’ll love this thing knowing you.” After the first few nails I was in LOVE with this thing. LOL Like I wanted to nail everything at that point. It was like I was in the wild west and that was my gun of choice. As I was going about my business with it I happened to look up at him, staring at me with the biggest grin on his face. I said “What hon?” He just laughed and said “Yep, I knew you loved that thing!”
He’s right! So by today I’m a pro at it as I can get it all set up, load the gun with the nails and finish nailing my board before he’s done putting the cement down on the next one. I’ve promoted myself to Foreman and he’s the grunt as he’s holding up production. Yeah I’m thinking he’s created a monster.
As for a functional kitchen I’m guessing by Wed/Thursday I’ll have a sink and stove back but if not I’m still able to make food with my portable convection grill, convection toaster oven and pressure cooker. Trust me, there’d be no living with that man if he didn’t eat.
With that it’s time to finish up the last bit of board on the floor before we head back out to Home Depot… oh the joy. LOL Have an amazing week!
