Oh Halloween how I love thee. Actually I think I love you more than Christmas the older I get. Now don’t get me wrong, Christmas rocks in its own right – the food, the presents, family get-togethers and so forth but Halloween…it’s just spooktacular! Dressing up like your favorite super hero (hey, don’t judge I can still be Wonder Woman if I want to! lol), the parties, the trick-or-treaters and the candy. OH THE CANDY!!! And if you’re like me, you’re totally into creating devilishly delicious treat bags for folks. Join me as I gather all of my BOO’ing needs from Walmart so I can BOO It Forward. Also make sure you check out BOOItForward.com as that’s where you’ll be able to bring out your own BOO kit cards (you’ll need them for this DIY BOO kit)!
When we first moved into our house we started a yearly tradition called “Boofest” where it was an adult-only party where costumes were required (except clowns… no, no, no never a clown), you brought a dish and you got to be a kid again for a night. I’d cook and bake for days and buy tons of MARS candies. Our house is a total SNICKERS®, M&M’S® and TWIX® fun size lovin’ house. And OMG don’t even get me started on Life Savers® Gummies – seriously, they are my favorite! Well after our first Boofest I noticed I kinda-sorta bought too much candy (though is that really a bad thing? Yeah, I thought not too!).
And since our Boofest was the weekend before actual Halloween I started a tradition of BOO’ing my coworkers. With the leftover candies I’d create fun little bags of treats with notes attached without saying who it was from. Some would guess it was from me while others had no clue however every person who got one always, ALWAYS, had a huge smile on their face. I mean think about it – you come into work when you’d rather be home either still in bed and or in your jammies only but since you’re not adopted into some uber rich family you have to work for a living. You round the corner, walk into your office/cube and there sitting on your desk is a Spooktacular bag filled with candies and treats. Kinda makes coming to work totally worth it!
This year I’m partnering up with great folks from MARS, Wrigley, American Greetings® and Dr Pepper to BOO It Forward. This concept is so up my alley that I over the moon happy to be doing this. I’m a firm believer in paying it forward either with a kind gesture, a smile or a surprise treat bag. Everyone deserves a smile and to feel special.
And you should all know by now I’m a frequent shopper at my local Walmart it’s super easy and quick for me to get everything I need to create a smile for someone. I mean they have EVERYTHING I need plus I love the fact that the aisles are clearly marked so there is never a time when I have to wander around aimlessly trying to find something.
Now before I get into the DIY Tutorial part of the blog I want you go check out the BOO It Forward Sweepstakes where you have a chance to win a $500 Walmart Gift Card! That’s a whole lot of candy and goodies! And with Walmart having everything, they truly are your one-stop shop for building a creative BOO’ing Kit this Halloween. And you HAVE to make sure you grab a few packs of Dr Pepper Mini Monster cans! They are the 7.5 ounce Sunkist® Orange, Canada Dry™, A&W® Root Beer cans featuring creepy scary monsters. These are an in-store only item.
BUT OMG guys, when you buy these cans you HAVE to download the Mini Monsters App!!! Check it out! The monster on each can comes to life with an augmented reality experience AND….. interact with each other! It’s easy peasy do this, just download the app and activate the experience!

Witch’s Broom BOO Treat Bags
- Create the broom’s bristles by cutting one of the paper bags in 1 ⁄4″ strips from the very top (where the bag opens) to 1/2” from the bottom of the bag stopping at the part of the bag that sits flat on the table top.
- Take one of the American Greetings® treat bags and place 2 Mini Monsters cans on the bottom.
- Next add in assorted candies and a twig leaving 1” space at the top.
- Twist tie the bag shut and place the bag inside the cut paper bag.
- Gather up the bristles at the top of the treat bag and twig.
- Holding everything tightly secure with twine.
- Cut off the excess bristles about 1” above the twine cut. (reserve the excess bristles)
- Adorn with the “You’ve Been BOO’d” card.
- Leave this bag on a coworkers desk with the instructions they must “BOO It Forward”.
- Watch from a distance the smiles they will have on their faces as they see their spooktacular treat!
Ghostly BOO Treat Bags
- Take one American Greetings® treat bag and place one Mini Monsters can on the bottom (lying flat).
- Fill the bag with assorted candies while placing one additional Mini Monsters can vertically in the middle (this will act as the body of the ghost). Be sure to add more candies around the outside of the can to keep it stable. Leave 1/2” space at the top.
- Twist tie the bag shut.
- Take some of the excess bristles cut from the witch’s broom and crumble them up into a 1-2” ball. Wrap the ball in plastic wrap.
- Tape or hot glue the ball on the top of the bag (this forms the ghost’s head).
- Take 2 14-18” square pieces of cheesecloth and drape them over top of the bag to form the ghost.
- Grab a piece of twine and tie the cheesecloth around the top of the can, almost where the head connects.
- Gently fluff the cheesecloth down so it covers the twine.
- Take a black marker and draw ghost eyes and mouth.
- Adorn with a “You’ve Been BOO’d” card.
- Leave this bag on a coworkers desk with the instructions they must “BOO It Forward”.
- Watch from a distance the smiles they will have on their faces as they see their spooktacular treat!
