Happy Sunday TKW Family and Happy early Thanksgiving! So are you all ready for the upcoming holiday? Is your turkey thawing yet? If you’re unsure how long it takes to thaw a turkey, check out this post. Poultry is not something to mess with when it comes to handing it safely. So I’m FINALLY done with all of my shopping for Thanksgiving. I made the HUGE mistake yesterday of hitting up Sam’s club around 5pm to get a few things I needed. 6 items… I bought 6 items and it took me almost an hour to get through the store. The lines to check out weren’t bad at all and the folks working there were great BUT it was freaking feeding time at the zoo! OMG it was a madhouse with all of the free samples. I mean seriously, I get the whole gist is to try new items and see how items marry well together but OMG seriously… do not fight over a 1×1″ cube of cheese. Eat at home – seriously. Eat at home. You’re not there for dinner or lunch. You’re there to shop. </end rant> lol
So yeah, shopping was CRAZY yesterday and it actually was so bad that I skipped going to Walmart afterwards as I had such a headache from feeding frenzy at the store that I just couldn’t do people any more. I just wanted to go home, put my pajamas on, take some Tylenol and have a drink. If I lived in an area that delivered groceries I think I’d actually consider it just for the holidays. Oy!
Favorite Thanksgiving Memories
Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving memory or set of memories? Growing up there isn’t any one particular Thanksgiving that sticks out as more awesome than the other as truly there were all incredible. Dad and my sister, Dianna, would prep the stuffing the night before as EVERYONE loved their stuffing (I didn’t as I hated chunks of onions/stuff in it). When they made stuffing they would toast up 8-12 loaves of bread. Yes, 8-12 loaves of bread! My job was to sit at the toaster for about an hour toasting all of the bread. Yeah I know, “why didn’t you use the broiler in the oven, Lor?” – would have been nice if any of us had thought of that then. LOL But it was fine. Dad would put Christmas albums on in the living room on the large console stereo and we’d all sit in the kitchen singing along. Dianna would chop up the onions and celery while Dad would stand at the stove in this blue flannel pj bottoms dancing away as he sautéed up the veggies. Mom would sit at the other end of our large table making bread and rolls for proofing. The whole house would smell like buttered onions and warm toast. If I close my eyes now I can still smell it.
My other favorite Thanksgiving memory is the very first family meal I had with Mr. Fantabulous’ family. Marrying into an Italian family there were things I had to learn not including those items related to cooking or recipes. It was about mannerisms and how they spoke with one another and well, how loudly they spoke. As I sat at the table all I saw were arms flailing, hands reaching everywhere and what sounded like “yelling”. I honestly sat there rather uncomfortable. It wasn’t until Mr. Fantabulous said “loudly”, “What’s wrong? Don’t you like my Mom’s cooking?” Guys it was like he flipped a switch and all sound went off and all eyes were locked on me. My eyes got huge like silver dollars and I must have turned 15 shades of red from embarrassment. I said, “OMG no, it’s delicious!” as I kicked him under the table for embarrassing me. Of course he then says, “Well why are you so quiet? Why aren’t you eating and why did you just kick me?” I first said I was fine but that wasn’t good enough. Yours truly was on the hot seat. Papa Fantabulous said, “Lori, what’s wrong?” I looked up at him, almost with tears in my eyes as I was so embarrassed and asked, “Why are you all so angry? Why are you yelling at one another and waving your hands/fists at one another? It’s Thanksgiving; you should all be happy and full of love.”
Don’t know how it was possible but the room went even more silence for what seemed like forever. Finally the biggest belly laughs erupted throughout the room (even Mama Fantabulous who finally quit giving me the death glare). Papa Fantabulous got up and walked over to me and said, “Oh honey that’s how we show we love one another. We’re loud and we talk with our hands. We’re Italian.” and then he gave me the biggest kiss on my cheeks. Mama Fantabulous asked my husband, “Didn’t you warn her about how we are?” to which he laughed and said, “Nope” while his other brothers high-fived him. I gave him “the look” and as I did I reached over to his plate and took the last roll he stole from his other brother and stuffed it in my mouth. He went from laughing to a classic look of shock. He said, “HEY!!! WTH???” I said, “Sucks to be you huh? Next time you’ll know better to not mess with me” and high-fived the rest of the family. Mama Fantabulous said to Papa Fantabulous across the table, “She’ll fit in quite nicely”.
