It’s Time For Spud Love – Amazing Grilled Baked Potatoes
Potatoes are one of those ever-present foods in my house. Seriously potatoes are a side dish, a main dish, a dessert, and pretty much anything in between.
Grab Your Ingredients
Recipes like these are my favorite – just 3 ingredients needed for something truly amazing. Yes, potatoes on their own can be bland but when they are grilled perfectly, they can be truly incredible!
And honestly, you can eat them plain or add just simple salt and butter to the inside. Or, if you’re like me, you can totally make them a meal like these Chili Stuffed Potatoes.
- Potatoes – Sweet Potatoes or Russet Potatoes are my favorite for recipes like this
- Olive Oil
- Kosher Salt

These were grilled on my Yoder Smokers Flattop Grill with charcoal but you can easily make these on a pellet grill or a gas grill. The important thing to remember is that you want the grill to be set to 350F and use indirect heat.
- Preheat the flattop grill to 350F for indirect heat. You can also do directly over the flames IF the flames/charcoal are well below the potatoes (like in my video). Not sure how to set up for indirect heat? Check out THIS POST!
- Clean your potatoes, dry them, coat them liberally with olive oil, and season on with Kosher Salt.
- Grill for 30 minutes then turn over and, depending on the size of the potato, it’ll take another 20-35 minutes until they are perfectly done.
- Once they are done, remove them from the grill and serve.
How To Tell When Potatoes Are Done
The most reliable way to know when they are done is to take the internal temperature. It should read about 210F.
Yep, that’s it.
To Wrap In Foil Or Not?
I am not a fan of wrapping them. The foil “steams” the potato which will make the inside soft but you get a super soggy exterior. And I’m sorry but anything soggy when it comes to food is not appealing.
Keeping Grilled Potatoes Warm
The best method is to use a bread-warming drawer or a heat-proof drawer. You can also place them in a warm oven set to 200F and place them directly on the rack or a lined baking pan.
That way the skin of the potato stays crisp and insides hot.
If you have neither you can wrap in foil for a few AFTER they are done baking but know that you do risk rendering that crispy skin to a more soft/soggy state.
Grilling Other Potatoes
Now if you’re like me, you’ll also have a bag of baby new potatoes too. Those as well can be grilled. I would avoid waxy, red, blue/purple or fingerling potatoes in this recipe as you’ll end up with more of a sticky texture rather than the light and fluffy we all love.
For the smaller potatoes, I rely on 2 different methods that honestly depend on the outcome I’m going for:
- Par-boiled – To help speed up the time it takes to grill them, par-boil them for about 15/20 minutes or until they are fork tender. Coat them in oil, salt them, and if needed, skewer them (depending on their size) before grilling. This method is used for crisping the skin while leaving the insides super tender
- Raw Grilled – coat in oil, salt, and grill. Again, depending on the size of them it may be easier to skewer them first before placing them on the grill.
