When it comes to the best summer hot dog, these grilled bacon-wrapped cheese and sauerkraut stuffed hot dogs are the best bite of the summer!
How I Summer
Summer is synonymous with sizzling grills and mouthwatering hot dogs. But if you’re looking to take your hot dog game to the next level, look no further. These grilled bacon-wrapped cheese and sauerkraut stuffed hot dogs are a game-changer.
Grab Your Ingredients
This recipe is so simple and only requires a few ingredients:
- Hot Dogs – Go with the larger size either from Meat ‘n Bone or Costco
- Frank’s Sauerkraut
- Bacon
- Cheese
Prep The Hot Dogs
- Split each hot dog lengthwise but not all the way through. Place some cheese into the hotdog slit. Evenly divide the sauerkraut and stuff that into the slit.
- Starting at one end of the hot dog, place a piece of bacon at the end, secure it with a toothpick, and wrap it around the hotdog.
- Grab a second piece of bacon, wrap, and add 1-2 more toothpicks to secure.* Do not wrap too tight!
- Cover the hotdogs with plastic wrap and place them in the fridge for an hour.
Chef’s Tip: Soaking Toothpicks
I’m sure most of you know this but maybe not everyone does. When you go to cook or grill using wooding toothpicks, you must soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using them in your dish. This way they won’t catch fire when grilling
Fire Up The Grill
You can make these on a gas, pellet, or charcoal grill.
- Preheat the grill to 400F. Grill 5-6 minutes per side until the bacon is cooked through, cheese is melted, & hot dog has plumped. Plate and remove the toothpicks, carefully.
Add More Cheese
Now this is my favorite part because well, there’s more cheese. Go with your favorite cheesesauce recipe. Honestly, I’m crushing HARD on these cheese sauce mixes from Hoosier Hill (I’ll link them):
Every Cookout Needs This
When I first thought about creating this hot dog I knew that the concept of a grilled, bacon-wrapped, and stuffed hot dog would be amazing but when I took that first bite I was blown away but just how AMAZING it truly was!
The Perfect Summer Hot Dog
This hot dog is perfect and something that needs to be on everyone’s cookout menu this summer! Coming from a girl who loves ketchup and mustard on her hot dogs, this honestly is a million times better!
Recipe Substitutions & Additions
This is my favorite part of recipes, so let’s see how I can help you mix things up!
- Hot Dogs – you can go with all beef, steak, chicken, or even go with kielbasa and sausages
- Cheese – go with what you love but I would avoid super soft cheese like fresh mozzarella or brie. Pepperjack, Cheddar, Gouda, Swiss, or a mixture of these would be amazing. I would just go with “sticks” of cheese versus shredded.
- Bacon – Go with regular-cut versus thicker-cut bacon
- Sauerkraut – seriously, Frank’s is the only sauerkraut as it’s THE BEST
